Make sure you have a good, full-size hammer (not a small or miniature one as it will not do the job). ★ 2. Make sure you're reasonably adept at using said hammer (i.e. reasonably good hand strength, hand-to-eye coordination, etc.). Your fingers and your nerves will be the better for it. ★ 3. Pre-measuring carefully before installing the snaps. As the old adage goes...measure twice, cut once. ★ 4. Marking the material with a marker once you're sure of where you want to install the snaps and then piercing the matierial carefully (a sharp, narrow awl helps with this) to create a small hole through which to place the shank (stud) of the snap - this helps keep it in position whilst you're using the hammer to secure the snap to the material. ★ 5. Lastly, but by no means least, make sure you have a solid substrate upon which to work - like a cement cinder block or stone of some sort that's firmly in place as you'll need to give these (and any snap like these) a few good firm taps/whacks with your hammer and having a solid foundation to work on is key to success - again, your fingers, your nerves (and your significant other if you have one) will be thankful.
